rules.
GENERAL. No Godmodding should go without saying at this point. I write with anyone, multimuse, OC, canon, as long as the muse is developed and has sufficient information available to me. Shouldn't have to say it but do not take my original content as your own. This includes headcanons and metas. Personals do not interact. TRIGGERS. I will always do my best to tag sensitive content, and if I ever miss something feel free to point it out to me, likewise if you would like something to be tagged, you are welcome to drop me a message about it. Keep in mind though that due to his character arc, this blog will deal with a lot of dark shit. Please tread lightly if you are especially vulnerable to discussions of PTSD, torture, bad mental health etc. REPLIES & FORMATTING. I don't expect my length to be 100% matched, but I do appreciate some attempts to keep it close. I very quickly will drop threads if I write you paragraphs and receive a single line in return. I tend to write multi-para, but I am up for several different styles! PERSONAL BLOGS. I am absolutely fine with being followed by personal (non-rp) blogs. Thank you for being interested! I do ask, however, for the sake of my activity, that you don't interact with my in character posts. Gifsets and photosets and things like that are fine though. Repeated breaking of this rule will result in a softblock! SHIPPING. If our muses have chemistry, I’m up for shipping them. I would prefer some conversation happening before getting into shippy things, even if it’s just a quick message to ask if it’s okay. Once that has been established, go wild.
FOLLOWING. This blog is selective and private, meaning I write exclusively with mutuals. I am 28, and for my own comfort, I would rather keep my mutuals at 18+. However, non-mutuals are welcome to send in asks, or jump into my IMs if you’d like to talk! SMUT & NSFW. No explicit smut will appear on my blog as I’m uncomfortable writing it. Anything before that point is fair game though! ACTIVITY & CONTACT. I will often times be online even if I’m not actively posting. Mutuals are free to ask for my Discord! I will try my best to answer in a reasonable time frame, but if it has been a while (i.e. two weeks or more), feel free to poke me for an answer! DRAMA. For the sake of my own mental health, I will not be getting involved in any drama/discourse that passes my dash. If you want to have a conversation with me about anything, my ask and IMs are always open. ABOUT THE MUN. My name is Holly, I'm 28 and from the UK. I've been writing Bucky since 2016 when I couldn't escape the pull after Civil War. I'm autistic and Bucky is definitely one of my special interests. I like to think I'm pretty chill, so if you ever want to chat, don't hesitate to hope into my IMs! CREDIT. The PSD I'm using is Show Yourself by jaynedits. All other graphics are made by myself, unless noted in a post otherwise.

IMPORTANT NOTES.
An important thing about my Bucky is that, ever since they were kids, he has loved Steve Rogers. Requited or not, it does not matter. Bucky Barnes is in love with Steve Rogers. He'll have other relationships, of course, if that love is of the unrequited sort, and he does give his all to his partners. They would never know of his first love unless he told them. And he'd let Steve go, if given the time and care to do so. But his baseline is loving that damn idiot he grew up with.
He has an incredible prosthetic, but Bucky is still an amputee. And that comes with all the same territory as someone without a metal arm. He's also lost at least parts of his arm multiple times, as Isiah Bradley says he took half of it off when they fought. So, there's plenty of trauma there. Do not be surprised if he's not okay with it being touched.
His PTSD from his time as the Winter Soldier will always be something he deals with. He is the longest serving prisoner of war, and that has a definite effect on his psyche. When he finds a therapist he clicks with, his coping mechanisms get healthier, but he'll never be the Bucky from before the war again.

biography.
Born at the tail end of the Great War, James Buchanan 'Bucky' Barnes had a doting family. The eldest of four children, he took his role as big brother seriously, caring devotedly for his sisters, seeing himself as their protector. His family was not overtly wealthy, but not living in poverty either, even when hit hard by the Depression. Always strong and bright, Bucky excelled at school. At the age of eight, Bucky came across a group of bullies beating up a smaller boy, demanding money from him. Quick to temper on behalf of others, Bucky threw himself into the fight, scaring them off and making a new, lifelong friend in the process: Steve Rogers. The two families came to live in each other's pockets through their sons, the pair having regular sleepovers and dinner at each other's house. Bucky added another soul to his list of those he must protect, and soon Mrs Rogers lived on that list as well. He liked the small woman, seeing her almost like a second mother, and her eventual death devastated him as well, even with a rather large family of his own. But what hurt more was seeing his best friend left alone. He had been caring for Steve for years, helping him through fevers, asthma attacks, illness after illness. So proposing they move in together as roommates seemed like the best idea.Just before leaving school, George got his son a weekend job with a family friend, organising their books and helping out around one of the few grocery stores the man owed. After graduating, Bucky was taken on full time, bouncing around between the three local stores. It was boring but paid well enough to afford Steve's medicines and doctor's appointments, and the discount on groceries wasn't something to be sniffed at. It felt like their lives were going alright until the country went to war.Being drafted after seeing Steve try again and again to enlist was hard. Bucky lied, told his friend he had enlisted and been accepted, shipping off to basic with guilt in his heart. Once there, his talent with a sniper rifle was noticed and he raised through the ranks to sergeant. Seeing what other men went through, he felt a sense of relief that his best friend would not have to face this. When he at last was sent out to fight in the actual war, Bucky was hardened. The deaths of men he'd known hurt, but he had learnt how to hide his feelings beneath a calm mask. Until HYDRA captured the 107th and it all went to hell. Trapped in a cell and forced to do hard labour, the men began to wear down, especially when one would be taken, never to return. When it came time for one of the men from Bucky's cell to be picked, he volunteered himself, not willing to see another friend lost, no matter how selfish. On Zola's operating table, he was pumped full of drugs, burning his veins. Whenever he was conscious, he was in pain, the doctor leering over him, asking questions. To which Bucky would reply only with the trained answer, earning himself more pain but the satisfaction that they had not broken him. When at last he was reunited with Steve again, a Steve so changed from the one he had left behind that he believed himself dead, Bucky went with him easily. His outward appearance had changed, but it was quickly apparent that it was still Steve inside. That made it a little easier to deal with the fact that his best friend had signed up for an science experiment on the off chance he would get to fight. But Bucky was perfectly willing to follow that same best friend in his attempts to make the world better. After all, who else could watch Steve Rogers' back like Bucky Barnes? The Howling Commandos quickly became a tight knit group of friends, people Bucky trusted completely. When it came to tracking down Zola on a train to Switzerland, he never imagined his whole life could be stripped from him in one fall. Reaching out for Steve, feeling the warmth of his fingers, but missing, falling, screaming. Somewhere along the way his left arm was torn away just above the elbow, a bright agony to join the rest. Laying in a ravine, he waited for Death to come and take him, but instead, he was found, and brought back to the man he had been trying to kill: Zola. His transformation into the Winter Soldier began. His arm was replaced with a newer, stronger, better one. The metal would catch the light and look beautiful in its deadliness. Subjected to torture beyond imagination. All to test the effects of the serum. Brainwashing, memory wipes. The electricity would flow out of the machine and remove everything that made James Barnes human, leaving him a shell to be controlled and used. And he was used. Trained viciously, he was sent out to kill for HYDRA, never revealed, hidden in mask and goggles, he became little more than a myth, a ghost story. The Winter Soldier. The Asset. Not a man, but a weapon. Between missions, he would be placed in cryostasis, the cold his constant companion. In 2014, he was brought out once more to kill Nicholas J Fury, Director of SHIELD. It should have been an easy job, but the man made it hard, and once that particular task was assumed completed, he was sent out once more, to kill one Captain America. A formidable foe given they both shared a serum, and with his associates, Black Widow and the Falcon. But he should have been able to complete the mission. Until some lost, forgotten, thought-erased part of his mind began to wake, began make itself known.Even after being wiped again, Steve Rogers managed to find Bucky Barnes beneath the Soldier, and with nine words broke seven decades of brainwashing. After fishing the Captain from the Potomac, he went into hiding, trying to sort fact from fiction. For a time, he believed it to be a trick until visiting a museum and coming face to face with the man he had once been. From there, memories came flooding back, so quick it hurt, so many that he had to write them down. Eventually he made his way to Europe, figuring it would be easier to blend in there with the languages programmed into him, slipping from country to country on money take from various HYDRA safehouses until at last he ended up in Romania. His apartment was modest--shabby, really--but it was the first home he'd had in seventy years. It took months for him to think of himself as Bucky again, but eventually it came. He'd buy things from the local market, a glove covering the metal of his hand. He was living peacefully, dealing with the aftereffects of his trauma. He followed Steve's movements through the news and internet, but decided against seeking him out until he was better. More like the man he had once been.Of course, then he was framed as a terrorist. That one act brought his tenuous peace crashing down, reuniting him with Steve and eventually led them back to a hidden base in Siberia where the Avengers were truly torn apart. Losing his arm in the fight against Tony Stark, T'Challa, king of Wakanda, offered them solace. After recouperating in Wakanda, a pocket of calm for the first time since he shipped off to war in 1943, it came time to finally remove Hydra's last hold on him: the code words. It was not an easy process, but eventually their power over him was broken, and he was free.Picking up a gun again to try and save the world from Thanos, fighting side by side with Steve again, seemed a worthy cause. But then they failed. And he was the first to fall when Thanos snapped his fingers.Five years later, brought back with everyone else, they finish the fight. Needing to return the stones to their rightful place in the timeline, Steve takes one last trip back. And when he returns, it's with a decision they'd both discussed. Passing on the shield to Sam. Neither of them had even gotten to go home from their war, and so they do.Buying a place in Brooklyn, after being exonerated, Bucky starts to figure out what he wants to do with his life. And that turns out to be helping people.
abilities.

marksman.
Bucky was an incredibly accurate shot even before the serum was able to influence his reflexes. During the war, Col. Philips noted that Bucky's long range scope accuracy was ninety percent. after the serum, he is an inhumanly good shot, from great distances and in less than optimal conditions.

strength.
After receiving Zola's serum, Bucky's strength is greatly increased. Many of his abilities mirror Steve Rogers', this one included. He is able to lift incredibly heavy loads with little effort. Additionally, his prosthetics are able to bear intense weights.

healing factor.
Another side effect of the serum, thanks to his increased metabolism, wounds heal at least four times faster than usual. This healing factor also means he is unaffected by caffeine, alcohol and many other drugs. However, even his healing factor can't overcome some trauma, leading to scars like those around his left arm.

reflexes.
Bucky was always quick to react to things, but this was another thing enhanced by the serum he received. Able to catch Steve's shield at speed, as well as dodge various projectiles like grenades and knives.

speed.
Bucky is able to keep up and sometimes overpass cars on ordinary streets, as well as keep pace with Steve. He is able to match most enhanced individuals.

agility.
He's able to jump great distances and heights with ease, the likes of across rooftops and over moving vehicles.

stamina.
The serum enhanced Bucky's stamina, but the conditioning from HYDRA had a hand in it as well. When making him into the winter soldier, his handlers would train him to ignore the signals from his body to stop. Ultimately, he can go until he is physically unable to, but is trying to unlearn this.

durability.
Thanks to the serum, Bucky's bones and skin are more resistant to damage. As well as surviving his fall from the train, he's able to jump from great heights with no ill effects. He's also able to withstand blows that would otherwise injure or kill non-enhanced humans. However even this has a limit: some of the experiements HYDRA put him through have left permanent scars.

longevity.
Although many might assume Bucky's lack of aging was purely down to being put into cryostasis between missions, this isn't entirely the case. Like Steve, his cells don't break down at the same speed as someone without the serum, meaning he will live longer than the average human, even without cryo.

master assassin.
Brutally trained until he was the best of the best, Bucky can perform assassinations without a single piece of evidence that could trace them back to him, unless the mission called for it as a warning.

martial arts.
Before the war, Bucky was a three time welterweight boxing champion. However HYDRA forced him to learn many more skills. He employs mixed martial arts that include elements of systema, karate, boxing, muay Thai, Krav Maga, and kali.

weapons handling.
Bucky has a vast knowledge of many different weapons, but mainly deals in guns and knives. However he is also proficient with Steve's shield, having helped him train with it during the war.

tactician.
Always very bright, Bucky's natural aptitude for tactics served him well as a sergeant during the war and as Steve's second in command of the Howling Commandos. He was also able to undertake missions for HYDRA mostly unaccompanied, as well as staying hidden for two years before Zemo's attack on the UN.

vehicles.
Growing up the son of a mechanic, Bucky knew how to drive from an early age, both cars and motorbikes. HYDRA trains him in yet more, allowing him to pilot various planes and helicopters, even quinjets.

multilingualism.
As a child, Bucky grew up speaking Yiddish and English at home, as well as learning Hebrew. While at war, he picked up French and German with little trouble, as well as a little Russian. HYDRA taught him dozens of other languages, allowing him to slip into many countries. He also learned Xhosa while in Wakanda.
some info taken from here.
appearance.
distinguishing features.
One of the first things people tend to notice about Bucky is either his habit of always wearing gloves, his prosthetic arm or his lackthereof. Depending on his comfort levels, he'll hide the prosthetic, or go out with it plainly visible. However, some days he decides to forego it altogether. He also moves with surprising grace for his size, able to move silently through spaces that make that seem impossible. While he cuts his hair for his return to the US, trying to look the part of Howling Commando Bucky Barnes, he does eventually grow it back out again, until it falls down past his shoulders.

scars.
The serum would mean that ordinarily, all injuries would heal with no scarring. However, there is some damage even the serum can't fix, and Bucky's body is a map of it. The most obvious of this is the intense scarring around the site of his prosthetic. The repeated trauma of attaching the metal arm has left him with many marks. There was five distinct once across his chest, from his initial attempts to rid himself of the arm. Additionally, his skin is littered with marks from missions, torture, experiments — he can't account for most of them.

connections.

winifred barnes.
Bucky's mother. For the first two years of his life, it was just the two of them, as his father had been called up to fight in the Great War. Quick-witted and kind, Winnie Barnes could be counted on for anything. As he grew up, she ensured Bucky had everything he needed to succeed. She became close friends with Sarah Rogers, just as their sons did.

george barnes.
Bucky's father. George missed many of his son's firsts, away fighting as he was, but he did his best to make up for it when he came back. A doting father, he was always a solid presence in Bucky's world. Knowing Steve had lost his own father young, George also did his best to include him just as much as bucky.

barnes sisters.
Becca, Lula and Kitty make up the rest of the Barnes siblings, and Bucky absolutely adored them. Like all siblings, they had their spats, but he was always there to braid their hair, help with their homework or teach them to dance. They looked up to their big brother, and also accepted Steve as one of their own.

steve rogers.
Meeting when Bucky was eight and Steve just turned seven, neither boy knew what they would eventually mean to the other. Together through thick and thin, it was a rare day to see one without the other. There is nothing Bucky won't do for Steve.

sarah rogers.
Single mother to Steve, Sarah was someone Bucky often looked up to. Following the death of her husband, Joseph, Sarah did the best she could with what she had. Working as a nurse, she taught Bucky what she could so that he could better help Steve. When she died of TB, Bucky's grief was almost a match for Steve's.

howling commandos.
Lead by Steve following their escape from Hydra's imprisonment, the Howlies are an elite team. Lead by Captain Rogers and his second, Sergeant Barnes, they consist of Timothy 'Dum Dum' Dugan, Jim Morita, James Montgomery 'Monty' Falsworth, Gabe Jones and Jacques 'Frenchie' Dernier.

howard stark.
Founder of Stark Industries, Bucky first encountered Howard Stark by attending Stark Expo before shipping out in 1943. Later, he would learn the role Howard played in Steve getting the serum, and work with him through the SSR. In 1991, the Winter Soldier was sent to kill Howard and his wife, Maria.

peggy carter.
Margaret 'Peggy' Carter was an agent with the SSR, and met Steve before he received the serum. Bucky met her following the rescue from HYDRA, and never could quite decide how he felt about her. He was happy to see someone else appreciating Steve the way he did, though.

ssr.
The Strategic Scientific Reserve. This branch was a cross-government initiative to be an Allied answer to HYDRA. The SSR hired Dr Erskine to allow him to finally perfect his super soldier serum. Eventually the SSR was transformed into SHIELD.

armin zola.
HYDRA's top scientist and the man who kicked off the creation of the Winter Soldier. In the Krausberg facility in Austria, he injected Bucky with the first dose of his own version of the super soldier serum, allowing him to eventually survive his fall from the train in the Alps.

lukin.
Little is known about General Lukin, other than that he was one of the Winter Soldier's original handlers. He was the one responsible for implementing the use of trigger phrases in the soldier to make him easier to control.

karpov.
Colonel Karpov was the Winter Soldier's handler in the 1990s. He was responsible for sending the Soldier out to kill the Starks and retrieve the serum they were transporting. Additionally, he oversaw administering the serum to the five operatives designed to replace the Winter Soldier.

red room.
The purpose of the Red Room was to create the perfect assassins, using little girls as the basis of their plans. They treated these children brutally, using torture, brainwashing and manipulation to reach their goals. For a period of time they took control of the Winter Soldier to use him in training their Black Widows.

brock rumlow.
A member of Strike Team Alpha, Brock Rumlow was able to infiltrate SHIELD to the extent that he was trusted by both Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanov. However, he was also a handler for the Winter Soldier and showed his true colours during Project Insight. He was killed in Lagos while using the alias Crossbones.

alexander pierce.
A US senator and also one of the handlers for the Winter Soldier. High up in Hyrda and controling both SHIELD and the World Security Council. Manipulative and cruel, Pierce was eventually killed during the fight against Project Insight.

natasha romanov.
Trained in the Red Room as a Black Widow, Natasha eventually defected to the United States to work for SHIELD and joined the Avengers. When SHIELD was revealed to have been infested with HYDRA, Natasha dumped all of their files online. She was briefly trained by the Winter Soldier as a child, and had one of the few encounters with him that did not end in death.

sam wilson.
Sam was a pararescue with the US Air Force. Once home, he worked for the VA, helping other vets adjust to live away from combat as a counsellor. After meeting Steve Rogers, Sam eventually joined him to help stop Project Insight. He also joined the Avengers and eventually fought against the Accords. He helped Steve in his search for Bucky.

team cap.
Made up of Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, Sam Wilson, Wanda Maximoff, Clint Barton and Scott Lang, they opposed the Sokovia Accords and fought to try and stop Zemo from making use of the five other Winter Soldiers. Sam, Clint, Wanda and Scott were held in the Raft for a time before being broken out by Steve. They also received help from Sharon Carter.

team iron man.
Made up of Tony Stark, James Rhodes, Natasha Romanoff, Peter Parker, Vision and T'Challa. They agreed with or signed the Sokovia Accords and wanted to bring Bucky in for the bombing of the UN, despite his innocence. Natasha eventually changed her alliegence to help Steve and Bucky escape the airport to get to Siberia.

zemo.
Baron Helmut Zemo was the leader of an elite team in the Sokovian Armed Forces. During the battle against Ulton, his wife, son and father were killed. Seeking revenge on the Avengers, he framed the Winter Soldier for a terrorist attack on the UN, and showed Tony Stark the footage of the assassination of his parents, leading to his attempts to kill Bucky. Zemo was eventually arrested by T'Challa and put in prison.

hydra/shield.
SHIELD, or the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, grew from the SSR under Howard Stark and Peggy Carter. Although meant to protect people, SHIELD also employed the likes of Armin Zola and allowed HYDRA to grow within their ranks. Eventually Alexander Pierce was at their head and ready to launch Project Insight. Only the actions of Steve, Natasha, Sam and many still loyal SHIELD agents stopped HYDRA.

alpine.
Following his return home, and finding himself a bit listless, Bucky finally indulged a childhood dream of having a pet. Alpine is an all-white cat he adopted and now dotes on. She is definitely the queen of their house, and knows it. Very affectionate with Bucky, she can often be found on him when he's home.

ed kirby.
It took a few attempts for Bucky to find a therapist that worked for him. But after those false starts, he found Ed, a man so opposite to what he expected. His office is light, open and filled to the brim with soft things and distractions. He pushes Bucky, but also supports him in all things. He was integral to Bucky's integration to the US.

wakandans.
Being granted asylum in Wakanda following the fight in Siberia, Bucky spent some months in crostasis while they worked on how to remove the trigger words from his head. T'Challa, his sister Shuri, and Ayo of the Dora Milaje were his closest contacts, and some of the first people Bucky counted as friends since escaping HYDRA. They went above and beyond for him, and he'll always be grateful.
verses.

blessed be the boys time can't capture.
canon.
Eldest of four children, Bucky's home is loud and chaotic and loving, and he's happy. But sometimes he needs the quiet of the Rogers' place, spending almost as much time there as he does in his family's home. And when Mrs Rogers passes away, he can't very well leave his best friend on his own.

soldier keep on marching on.
canon.
He'd acted as if it would disappear if he just ignored it. The war. But then those damn draft papers arrive. And he lies to Steve, tells him he enlisted, unable to reveal that for all the army kept rejecting him, they demanded Bucky. And it turns out he's a good soldier, an even better shot. And for a bit there, he thinks he has a chance of making it back home, until Hydra captures him.

i will never be forgotten with you by my side
canon.
He should be happy. He should be furious. Steve was meant to be safe at home in Brooklyn, but here he was, almost a foot taller, suddenly broader than Bucky, and throwing himself into the line of fire. So, even though a medical discharge is offered, Bucky takes up his place as Steve's second. It's what leads to him being on a train. Falling down a ravine. Presumed dead.

you're part of a machine you are not a human being.
canon.
He doesn't know who he is. He doesn't care. He is not supposed to care. And so he doesn't. They took his arm and gave him a new one, and a new one, and a new one. The took his memories and replace them with orders and missions and death. Cold and murder. Murder and cold. Until the man on the bridge says a name and suddenly he is a person.

and i've lost who i am.
canon.
The man on the bridge – Steve, his name was Steve – had given him a name. Bucky. Bucky Barnes shared his face, but the memories? They were harder. The longer he stays away from the machine, the chair, the cold, the more fragments return, until he has a ratty quilt for a memory. Holes and patches, but solid. He feels like a person for the first time in a long time. He's writing down his memories, just in case anyone tries to steal them again. And he's doing okay. Until someone frames him as a terrorist.

the blood on my hands scares me to death.
canon.
Steve has found him and they're on the run again. The book is in the hands of a man who knows how to use it, and that is terrifying. Steve has turned against his team, his friends, and the guilt is crushing, it's too much. And then they're fighting Howard's kid, and his arm is gone again, but he remembers it this time. His mind is not his own and so it's best for everyone if he goes under again. At least for a while.

The trigger words are gone, but they still want Bucky to fight. And he will. Freedom is intoxicating. Freedom is terrifying. No one can use that book to control his mind, not anymore. But the peace he had wanted did not come. Instead, he is presented with a new arm and a gun. Where's the fight?

Following Steve’s retirement from Captain America, Bucky has a life of his own to lead. After being exonerated, finding an excellent therapist, adopting a cat and settling down in his old stomping grounds of Brooklyn, he finally gets to decide for himself what he wants to do with his life. And that is helping people.

come morning light you and i'll be safe & sound.

Rumours reach the US that one of the Howling Commandos is being held by enemy forces, and a rescue mission is undertaken shortly after the end of the war. HYDRA had already started its process to create their operative under the Winter Soldier project, but they don't get far and Bucky gets to go home. And once there, he takes up the fight to find Steve.

Several months after the fall of the helicarriers, and with his memories returning, Bucky surrenders to Steve. After some intense healing, an exoneration, and team building, eventually he is invited to join the Avengers.

After his fall from the train, Bucky is found by a group of Soviet soldiers. His wounds are cleared and he's placed in cryo, awaiting the return of Dr Zola to continue his project. However, the doctor never returns, and eventually the cryostasis chamber is forgotten. Until decades later when a team of urban explorers find it and call it in. After his fall in 1945, he wakes up in 2010. A year later, they find Captain America in the Arctic.

Crown Prince James is the youngest of four children, often found trailing after his older sisters. But his life is a happy one, until his father is deposed and his family slaughtered. Later, a little boy is found with no memory of who he is or where he came from. Only that his name is Bucky, and he has a ring bearing the name of Paris — his only clue as to where his family might be.

The world has gone to shit. With the cordyceps fungus taking rational human beings and turning them into monsters, death is around every corner and very few places in the world can be considered as safe.

Bucky is a creature of the sea — born in the depths, he finds himself fascinated by the world above, even if its dangerous.

He moves home, which means Brooklyn to anyone who has a passing knowledge of him. Of course, home has never been a place to Bucky, but people. Only his people are all gone, dead or dying or gone. So he moves to a place he calls home, after getting his pardon. He starts seeing a therapist. He follows her instructions, kinda. He does not mention the nightmares. Life goes on.

got nothing left to live for got no reason yet to die.

Sam and Bucky work together to stop some bad guys from hurting innocent people. The usual. He's attending his court mandated therapy. He's making amends (or trying). He's ignoring Sam, because Sam reminds him too much of Steve, and Sam gave away the shield. It's ridiculous to feel attached to a hunk of metal, but when it's all you have left of the only family you've ever known? Well. But he also won't let Sam do this alone, because Sam is also all he has left of Steve, and it was what Steve would have wanted. He comes out of the experience with a new friend, a true friend, and a plan on how to make amends. Actual ones this time.

let mercy come and wash away what i've done.

The big things – saving people, fighting – come easy. He's been doing it for close on ninety years. Being a person is harder. But he's working on it, okay? He finds a new therapist, one who he finds it easier to actually talk to, not just the one the government decided he should have. He goes out, does things. Gets himself a cat, calls her Alpine. He's functioning. He's okay.

Following the events of Endgame, with Steve deciding to retire once he returned from his last task, and passing the shield to Sam, Bucky starts to properly reintegrate into the world. He is completely exonerated after some fighting, recognised as a prisoner of war and given both a backpay similar to Steve’s and compensation for all he went through. He keeps the backpay, but donates the compensation to charities and good causes. He knew there were better uses for that money than sitting in a bank account accruing interest. Buying a home in Brooklyn, not too far from Steve, he settles into being Bucky Barnes again, discovering what that really means in the twenty first century. He meets his extended family, joins them for holidays and exchanges emails. They aren’t in each other’s pockets, and he struggles with it sometimes, but Uncle Bucky isn’t a stranger. After some shopping around, he found a therapist he clicked with and started, slowly but surely, to heal. He’s the one who convinces Bucky he doesn’t need to keep fighting if he doesn’t want to. He can come home. He doesn’t fully retire — if he’s needed, he’ll go and put his skills to good use. But it’s not an obligation, nor something someone can force him to do. He was used for too long, and part of getting his sense of self back was reclaiming control of his own body. What he does do is put feelers out. Make it known that if someone is in a bad place, he’ll help. He’s always been a protector, ever since he was a kid, and it makes his life feel fulfilling. If someone has found themselves dragged into something way over their head, forced to do things out of fear, and needs a hand escaping, well. Bucky’s number is out there. And he’s got the money and the skills to make things better.

This is a list of sources I'd consider as having influenced/informed how I write Bucky. (You can also consider these fic recs, as they are excellent).
